Nevada Legal Assistants and Paralegals

Nevada paralegal law library in Zephyr Cove 89448Paralegals and legal assistants basically both fill comparable job positions and responsibilities, only with different titles. On the other hand, legal secretaries are not the equivalent of either of those two positions and are part of a different job category. Both legal assistants and paralegals help Zephyr Cove NV lawyers with a wide variety of job duties, such as maintaining client files, legal research, drafting legal documents and communicating with clients. Their specific job functions are relevant to the type of legal firm where they work. For example, a legal assistant for a criminal law practice may help with the logistics of a trial or transferring documents to court. In private practices, a paralegal’s work is normally billed by the hour as are the attorney’s. And the same as lawyers, they must perform with a high degree of professionalism and abide by a strict standard of professional ethics. As stated, their responsibilities can be diverse in support of the practices where they work, but a few of their day-to-day activities may involve:

  • Investigating and fact checking cases
  • Researching relevant laws and cases
  • Drafting correspondence and legal documents
  • Submitting legal papers with the court or opposing counsel
  • Helping attorneys prepare for trial and keep organized with their cases
  • Organizing and managing legal documents, files and additional records

With all of their duties, the role of a paralegal can be complicated and quite demanding. On the other hand, what they are not legally authorized to do is provide legal advice and counsel or represent a client in a legal proceeding. But they are not restricted to clerical or administrative duties more suited to the job of a legal secretary. Paralegals really are the right hand support systems for Zephyr Cove NV lawyers. And because they do so much of the legal preparation and ground work, lawyers are able to handle a much larger number of cases or clients than they could on their own.

Paralegal Training and Certification

As we previously covered, paralegals are basically the same as legal assistants, with paralegals possibly having more professional sounding job titles. In any case, for either position the educational requirements and opportunities will be the same. The fastest way to start your career as a paralegal is by obtaining a certificate, which can involve as little as 6 months to complete. A large number of entry level positions do call for an Associate’s Degree, which offer a more extensive education and may be acquired at numerous Zephyr Cove NV area community colleges in 2 years. And if you are interested in an even more extensive education, four year Bachelor’s Degrees are available as well. When you have obtained either a certificate or degree, you may choose to continue and obtain a certification. Although it is not a legal requirement in Nevada to practice as a paralegal, certification may not only help improve your career opportunities, but help establish you as a professional as well. Some of the highly regarded certifying agencies in the profession are:

  • National Federation of Paralegal Associations
  • American Alliance of Paralegals
  • National Association of Legal Assistants
  • National Association for Legal Professionals

By graduating with a degree or certificate from an accredited Zephyr Cove NV area school (we will cover the benefits of accreditation later) and earning a certification, you will have taken 2 crucial first steps that will help ensure your success as either a legal assistant or a paralegal.

But as we have previously covered, there are other important aspects to consider also, such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools. So let’s take a look at a few of the questions you should be asking the schools you are considering so that you can effectively vet each one and make your ultimate choice.

Is the Paralegal School Accredited? The paralegal program and school that you choose need to be accredited by a highly regarded organization such as the American Bar Association. If it is an online school, it can also get accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. Accreditation will not only help guarantee that the education you will obtain will be of the highest quality, but it will establish with potential employers that you are a qualified professional as well. A number of Zephyr Cove NV law firms will only hire entry level legal assistants that are graduates of an accredited school. Also, financial assistance and student loans are usually available only for accredited schools.

What’s the Program’s Reputation? Research what the reputations and rankings are for the Nevada legal assistant schools you are looking at. This is of particular importance if you are entering the field with no previous work history, since Zephyr Cove NV employers will need to rely on the quality of your education exclusively. Verifying that the program you choose is accredited is a good first step. Reviewing school rating services, such as those provided by U.S. News and World Report, can help confirm school rankings and quality of education as well. You can also call several law firms that you may have an interest in working for after graduating and ask which schools they suggest. Bear in mind that even though a school is not the most highly ranked, its paralegal program may still have an excellent reputation.

Does the School Sponsor Internships? Internship programs offer students an opportunity to experience working in a law firm or other Zephyr Cove NV legal operation while attending school. They can also provide an avenue for students to start establishing contacts within the legal community. Find out if the paralegal schools you are reviewing provide internship programs, specifically in areas of the law that you are most interested in entering upon graduation.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the paralegal programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Zephyr Cove NV legal services employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? Since laws vary from one state to another, it might be advantageous to enroll in a legal assistant school located in Nevada or the state where you want to work after graduation. In addition, it will be necessary to cultivate relationships in the neighboring Zephyr Cove NV legal community, possibly by means of an internship program. This is all the more justification to obtain your education in the community where you want to work. Also, if you attend classes at a community college, most charge a higher tuition for students that reside outside of their districts. So you may need to first consider those schools that are within your local region.

What is the Total Expense? Paralegal schools can vary in price based on the credential earned and the amount of training provided. However, tuition will not be the only cost for your training. Remember to add the cost of books, supplies and commuting to classes to your budget as well. Financial assistance may be available to help offset part of the cost, so be sure to contact the school’s financial aid office to find out what is offered in Zephyr Cove NV. Naturally if you opt to attend an online program, some of these supplementary expenses, for instance for commuting, may be decreased or eliminated.

Do the Class Times Accommodate your Schedule? Many legal students keep working while getting their training and need flexibility to schedule classes. If you can solely attend weekend or evening classes near Zephyr Cove NV, make sure classes are offered at those times. Additionally, if you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the program you enroll in provides that option.
